Chapter Eleven

Night three was as glorious as nights one and two. Miller was getting accustomed to Heather being the last person he talked to before going to sleep and the first person he said good morning to upon waking.

He didn’t mind all the sex either.

This pattern he and Heather had established brought him no end of joy and being around Heather was good for Aliza too. She was just the distraction his cousin needed to help put the past behind her and move forward. He loved that his parents and cousin had gotten along so well with Heather right away. That way if he wanted to make Heather part of his family, he’d get no objections.

The notion of Heather being his family both delighted him and scared the crap out of him.

“Earth to Mills,” Aliza said. “You’re about to put orange juice in your cereal, Cuz.”

He froze just before the first drop of orange juice hit his bran flakes. “Shit. What is wrong with me?”

“Something else is on your mind.” Aliza wiggled her eyebrows as she brushed past him to grab a bowl out of the cupboard. “Or someone.”

“Maybe I’m thinking about a difficult patient I have at the hospital.” He switched out the carton of juice for the milk.

“Yeah, sure.” His cousin swiped the bran flakes box from beside him and poured her own bowl of cereal. She allowed him to douse her flakes in milk before he returned the carton to the refrigerator. “And maybe I’ll spontaneously turn into a lizard later on this afternoon.”

She swatted his hand away like she used to when they were kids. “Maybe I will.” Aliza arrowed a spoon into the flakes and stirred until the bran lost its crunchiness and resembled a bowl of oatmeal instead. “Actually, I’m meeting Shaina at Moose Hill Meadows today to see about yoga classes with their residents. That seems like a good place to start on the job front.”

“Great.” He loved seeing his cousin take steps to get her life on track. Troy had done his damage—to both of them and Hansel—but none of them were going to let that asshole win. “I know Shaina loves working there and Marco’s dad, Jim, enjoys the place. I’ve consulted on some residents there also. It always seems as if it’s running like a well-oiled machine.”

“Those recommendations are good enough for me,” Aliza shoveled some cereal—or slop at this point—into her mouth. “And working there is much preferred over working nowhere.”

“You can always branch out from there. I can ask around at the hospital too. Maybe there are some connections to be made there. Yoga is all about health and wellness.”

“As are alternative medical practices.” Aliza tapped an index finger to the medical journal on the kitchen island. “I read your article about the healing properties of herbs and found it fascinating.”

“Really?” He’d been
